"CLAY: A SOUTHERN CENSUS" NOW OPEN
On display May 13 to June 25, 2022

The Clay Center of New Orleans is proud to present our 2022 installment of “Clay: A Southern Census.” This annual juried group show features ceramic vessels, sculptures, and wall-mounted works by artists residing in the states that make up the U.S. Census Bureau’s “South Region."

See this exhibition in person on Fridays and Saturdays between 12 and 6 pm, or see and shop the entire show online!

About the Juror
Asia Mathis is a ceramic artist based in Nashville, Tennessee. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 1999 and began work as a fulltime artist in 2004.

To portray the human search for authenticity, belonging, and the question of modern identity, Asia’s sculptural works feature animals, human figures, and poetry overlaid with complex and layered textural surfaces. Her pieces investigate the question of where we are truly at home when much of our ancestral culture may have been dissolved, destroyed, or is one in which we do not wish to be a part. With the same holding true for the environment, and the modern problem of being disconnected from the land and its creatures, a kind of 'hole' is created in our identity.

APPLY FOR "GEAUX CUPS V" BY MAY 30TH!
We are excited to announce that Justin Rothshank will be the juror for "Geaux Cups V," the 2022 installment of our popular annual exhibition of ceramic drinking vessels.

The title is a spoof on New Orleans’ infamous plastic “go cup,” the portable container that allows adults to imbibe while wandering the city’s 300-year-old streets.
Open to all manner of ceramic drinking vessels, this exhibition will be on display August 26 – September 24, 2022 in the Clay Center’s gallery space in the heart of New Orleans. Submit your application by May 30th!
