"FORM, PATTERN, TEXTURE"
A solo exhibition by Eri Sugimoto
March 10 - April 14, 2023
From March 10 to April 14 2023, the Clay Center presented "Form, Pattern, Texture," a solo exhibition of exquisite ceramic vessels by Eri Sugimoto.
About the Artist
Eri Sugimoto was born in Tokyo and raised in Yokohama, Japan. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and a Master of Design degree in Industrial Design. While working as an industrial designer in Japan, Eri was introduced to the world of clay and started hand-building pottery. She moved to the United States in 2005, began wheel-throwing in 2006, and now maintains a studio in Orange County, California.
Eri's work features distinct patterns created through her hand-cut paper-resist technique. Using the body of the piece as a canvas, she arranges the paper patterns to create a unique and dynamic composition. After applying slip made from the clay body, or her own handmade glaze-slip, she peels off the patterns and carefully cleans up the piece before firing.

"TRANSMUTATIONS"
A Solo Show by Meagan Gates
February 26 - March 27, 2021
"Transmutations" was a solo exhibition of work by Meaghan Gates. The work featured in this exhibition consisted of a series of hypothetical instances within the experience of fictitious biomorphic forms. These forms address the interconnected quality that organisms and the environment have with one another; symbiotic relationships which can lead to an array of outcomes in order to find an equilibrium.
Meaghan was selected for this exhibition opportunity through our annual open call for solo artist exhibition proposals. After reviewing applications from over 40 different artists, the Clay Center Board of Directors invited Meaghan to show her work in our gallery.
About the Artist
Meaghan Gates is a ceramicist who received her BFA from California State University, Chico and her MFA from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth as a Distinguished Art Fellow. She has worked and exhibited her ceramic sculptures both internationally and across the Unites States. Currently, she continues to develop new forms and teach as an adjunct professor at the University West Florida. Meaghan makes abstracted biological forms that are intended to be empathized with through their anthropomorphic qualities of gesture and color, in order to hypothesize the potential outcomes of change.
